A full day winter sightseeing tour to the historic Pilsner Urquell brewery, home of the Original Pilsner beer, and to the city of Pilsen (Plzeň).
This sightseeing tour is part by air-conditioned coach, part on foot.
After picking you up from your Prague hotel, we drive for around one hour to reach Pilsen.
Beer has been brewed in Pilsen since the 1200s, although this was dark beer. In 1842 Pilsner Urquell produced the world's first golden lager, with a new technique of fermentation, and of storing the beer in cold cellars cut into rock.
Today most pale lagers brewed in the world are based on Pilsner style beers. The history of "Pils" beer therefore is held within this fascinating brewery.
Our tour of the Pilsner Urquell brewery begins with a film showing the evolution of Pilsner Urquell, followed by a visit to the brewery museum, full of historical beer brewing equipment. Pilsner Urquell has invested heavily in the displays, to recreate this old world.
Next, we tour the modern Pilsner Urquell brewing plant to learn how science has transformed the process, before heading off into the vast cellars to explore the malt house and the traditional art of barrel making. We of course finish off with a tasting of freshly brewed, non-pasteurised Pilsner Urquell beer.
Included in the price of the trip is a good lunch in a traditional Czech restaurant attached to the brewery. They naturally serve the freshest Pilsner beer around, so half a litre is included with the meal.
Before we return to Prague we head for the city centre of Pilsen, to visit the town's beer museum.
Please note that in the Pilsner Urquell beer cellars the temperature only reaches 10C (50F). We advise bringing suitable clothing.
