Municipal House

Municipal House (Obecni Dum) is the premier Art Nouveau building in Prague. It houses several attractions, including one of the best concert halls in the city and a most elegant French restaurant.

Built in 1911 on the site of the former Royal Court Palace, Municipal House gained fame on the 28th October 1918 when the historic proclamation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia took place here.

Municipal House is the main attraction on Republic Square, which is located just a few minutes walk from both the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square.

Municipal House is a beautiful building from all aspects. The outside has intricate stonework, gold trimmings, frescos and stained glass windows.

Inside, at its heart, Municipal House has the huge Smetana Hall, one of the two main concert halls in Prague (the other is the Dvorák Hall at the Rudolfinum).

The interior of the Smetana is magnificent, decorated with works by a leading Czech artist of the early 20th century, Karel Spillar.

Classical concerts in the Smetana boast some of the largest orchestras to play the city. Indeed Municipal House is home to the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

Municipal House also hosts exhibitions, the occasional ball, has an American bar, a first-class French restaurant, Francouzska Restaurant, and a traditional Czech restaurant, Plzenska Restaurant.
