After meeting your guide near Charles Bridge in the Lesser Town, we take a tram up to the castle. Prague Castle is the city's No1 tourist attraction and the largest ancient castle complex in the world. It is set in a commanding position overlooking the city, from where the Kings of Bohemia once ruled.
Prague Castle is an intriguing mix of squares, buildings and fortifications. There are palaces, state apartments, great halls, churches, a monastery, viewing towers, and museums and art galleries.
The guide brings the whole complex to life, explaining the castle's turbulent history, and its royal and presidential connections.
We see St. Vitus Cathedral, site of the coronation of medieval kings and queens. We admire the beautiful architecture of the Old Royal Palace. And we see St. George's Basilica, founded in 920 AD, and the best-preserved Romanesque church in Prague. As we explore the grand squares and winding streets, we also discover the history of Golden Lane (Zlatá ulička); dating from the 15th century, skilled artisans lived and worked in this area, and it is where the mystical art of alchemy was practised!
Finally, because Prague Castle sits on a hill, we take in the stunning views over the city.
