Prague has so many churches and cathedrals that is known as the 'city of a hundred spires' (there are in fact over three hundred). Many churches are open to visitors during the day, while some host classical concerts at night.

Bethlehem Chapel (Betlemska Kaple) was founded in 1391, as a holy place where church services could be held in the Czech language. Jan Hus himself preached here between 1402-1412.

Church of Our Lady Victorious and Infant Jesus of Prague

Church of Our Lady Victorious (Kostel Panny Marie Vítězné) houses a small statue called the Infant Jesus of Prague. It is credited with miraculous healing powers and with saving Prague during the Swedish siege in 1639.

Beautiful Loreta is an important pilgrimage site, built to promote the legend of Santa Casa. The church is situated in a delightful courtyard surrounded by chapel-lined arcades.

Maisel Synagogue

Maisel Synagogue (Maiselova synagoga) is one of the historical monuments that form the Jewish Museum in Prague. It was built in 1590-92 and for a century it stood as the largest and most impressive building in the Jewish Ghetto.

Old-New Synagogue

Completed in 1270, the Old-New Synagogue (Staronová synagoga) is the oldest monument in the Jewish Quarter in Prague, and Europe's oldest working synagogue.

Spanish Synagogue

The Spanish Synagogue (Španělská synagoga) in Prague is described as the most beautiful synagogue in Europe. Set in the Jewish Quarter, it forms part of the Jewish Museum. It houses an exhibition on 'Jews in the Bohemian Lands', and is a wonderful setting for classical concerts.

St. Clement's Cathedral in Prague forms part of the Klementinum, the largest and one of the most historic complex of buildings in the Old Town. It lies on the Royal path, close to Charles Bridge.

In May 1942, two Czechoslovak paratroopers carried out the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi overseer of Czechoslovakia. A museum in the crypt of the church tells the story.

St. Francis Church at Charles Bridge has a magnificent organ which has been played by Mozart, Dvorak and Seger. Classical concerts at the church feature the organ, violin, trumpet and a soprano performing Ave Marie and other pieces from the Baroque period.

St. George's Basilica (Bazilika Sv. Jiří) was founded by Prince Vratislav (915-921) and is both the best-preserved Romanesque church in Prague, and the oldest church building in the Prague Castle complex.
St. George's Basilica is a popular setting for classical concerts.

The beautifully crafted 13th century St. Giles Church is situated in the heart of the Old Town in Prague. Gothic on the outside and Baroque within, St. Giles is a grand church, its high ceilings adorned with ornate frescos. Classical music concerts are held regularly here.

St. Martin in the Wall Church

St. Martin in the Wall is an ancient, beautifully preserved church set amongst the winding back streets of the Old Town in Prague. It was built in 1178-1187 in the Romanesque style. The acoustics and the historic setting make the classical concerts worth attending.

St. Nicholas Church (Kostel sv. Mikuláše) at Lesser Town Square, constructed between 1703-1755, is the largest of Prague's churches founded by the Jesuits. Visitors can climb the 215 steps of the belfry tower.

Beautiful St. Nicholas Church (Kostel sv. Mikuláše) at the Old Town Square was built in 1735, replacing an earlier parish church dating from at least the 13th century. Early evening classical concerts are held at St. Nicholas.

St. Salvator Church forms part of the Klementinum, the most historic complex of buildings in the Old Town. St. Salvator is a city landmark, a majestic church set at one end of Charles Bridge. Its two magnificent organs feature regularly in classical music concerts held at the church.

To the casual observer, St. Vitus Cathedral (Katedrála sv. Víta) is the dominant building within the Prague Castle complex. The cathedral is a Gothic masterpiece commissioned by Charles IV in 1344. Visitors can climb the Great South Tower to enjoy magnificent views over the city.
